Dear
bassam Tariq

my name is Aslam

I know you've probably heard this a lot, but YMX3 really inspired me

like many others, i've always been making videos my whole life.

from childhood me and my family were making ESPN sportscenter parodies, skits, and currently we are filming a family documentary where we interview all my aunts and uncles about their childhood and our grandpas sudden death

in high school I had a youtube channel about sneakers and streetwear, and then most recently 2 years ago i made 2 episodes on my youtube channel called behind the imam

Behind the Imam, episode 1: Aslam sitting with Shaykh Ahmad Saad in a tiled mosque room
ep. 1 with shaykh ahmad saad
Behind the Imam, episode 2: Aslam and Shaykh Umair Haseeb at a cafe table at night
ep. 2 with shaykh umair haseeb

it's been 2 years since I've posted or created anything, there's some life reasons why, but in those 2 years i've never felt inspiration the way I did during my first watch of YMX3 (I've now watched it 3 times)

it stuck with me so much that I actually signed up for 2 film classes next semester, one at Austin School of Film and the other at Austin Community College.

motivations for interviewing you:

while making my passionate case for everyone to watch this movie, I've often run into similar hesitations from many different people. For example, I'm part of a Muslim frat called ALM, and in this group chat with over 500 people, I've continuously run into the problem where people think this movie was made by someone who's not connected to Islam.

In my perspective, I was able to see this movie open up doors to invite more people to see Islam for what it really is, compassion and love.

Right at the beginning I teared up because of how amazing it was that a Hadith was being shown in theaters nationwide.

in the same theater where I watched The Odyssey , I was also able to see the words of the Prophet ﷺ being projected on the big screen

Ideal Interview Outcomes:

- I want people to know how intertwined Islam is in your life

- I want people to hear about your childhood/upbringing

- I listened that you take a tasbih to the movies, a lot of people can't conflate the idea of someone being in Hollywood while being connected to Islam. I want to show that this is possible and you don't need to sacrifice your morals to create art
